100 Miles

Yesterday I did my second ever century ride with some friends!  It was sponsored by a different friend's bike shop and was a charity for aplastic anemia research.  We're not sure of the final number, but it's rumored there were around 500 riders at the start, with options to ride 35, 65 or 100 miles.

Here we are at the 50 mile sag stop, still going strong!

Josh had to bail at the 65 mile sag, but the rest of us kept going.  The sun and heat didn't really start to get brutal till the 82 mile marker, and from there to the finish it was like pedaling through an oven.  It got to a point where Leigh and I had to just do our thing and push to the end---if for no other reason than to get OUT OF THE SUN.

But we made it to the finish and were so hot by then, we had almost stopped sweating!!  And amazingly, even after 100 miles, Leigh and I had kept the same pace we normally keep on rides a third as long.  Yeah!

It was a long day in the saddle, and the moment we got back, we loaded the bikes and headed straight for air conditioning.  Passed out relatively early last night, and today I have to admit, I'm really not that sore, just pretty fatigued.  Rested my legs during a matinee of the A-Team this afternoon (which was AWESOME!), and tomorrow I should be back at it again :)

  1. Btw, that yellow thing in between my handlebars is my travel pterodactyl that is strapped on with zip ties and comes with me on every ride.

  2. I didn't know you were doing another ride this weekend! What's a sag stop? Why'd Josh have to bail? Who's that lady in white? I can't see the pterodactyl! Well, not the yellow one, I just see the pink one with the bike helmet.

  3. Click on the picture to see it blown up...the yellow dactyl is in the center between the handlebars. Josh was getting heat stroke again. Woman in white is Leigh's friend Beverly who I just met and was super nice!

  4. Way to go. I'm too impressed for words. I never had the strength or stamina you have. Bravo!

Where did you place among the 500?

The yellow dactyl looks a bit melted. Do you shade him/her while you ride?
